Architecture with Intention: A Conversation with Bradley Falconer

Bradley Falconer has spent more than twenty-five years designing homes that blend beauty, functionality, and a deep respect for their surroundings 🌍. With a background spanning South Africa and Europe, he now leads the design of bespoke homes in Sotogrande, where his work is known for thoughtful detail, timeless character, and a strong sense of place.
In this Q&A, Bradley shares his philosophy, his design process, and what inspires him when creating meaningful living spaces ✨.

Q: How would you describe your architectrual style in three words?
A: Sensitive, Harmonius, Contextual.

Q: What first drew you to architecture, and how did your journey lead you to Sotogrande?
A:
My Father and Grandfather were both engineers and involved in building construction. I grew up on building sites, a very exciting place for a child to explore. My love for art and building, Architecture was natural discipline to pursue. As for landing in Sotogrande was pure luck, I continously count my blessings for this outcome.

Q: What makes Sotogrande a unique canvas for architecture?
A:
The people and families, it attracts both currently and historically. Its ability to accept a wide range of Architectural styles in a relatively small context. A diverse geographical landscape🏠.

Q: How do you balance modern design with the areas traditional Adalusian and Mediterranean roots?
A:
For me Architecture is a dance with space. I personally enjoy the interpretation of the Traditional building envelope and modern internal and external spaces which suits the Sotogrande context well. Incorporating patios, fountains and detals that have both historical and modern features of Andalusian Architecture.

Q: Sotogrande is known for its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, how do you design with that in mind?
A:
One of the principal aspects of Architecture is the flow between spaces, its logic and the seamless transition from internal spaces to esternal spaces. One does this through visual connection, the use of materials and fundamentally how you move from one to the other.

Q: How has the architecture in Sotogrande evolved in recent years, and where do you see it heading?
A:
Principally it has changed from designin summer holiday villas to family homes. This has fundamentally changed the distribution of spaces to tie in with current lifestyles trends. The demand for a bigger range of areas and rooms to suit family needs. Homes to live and grow.

Q: How do you approach sustainability and energy efficiency in your projects
A:
Through the use of local materials, local supplies and crafts-men. Most importantly the Sun which is our most constant and sustainable energy source in Southern Spain.

Q: What is your dream project or one thats still on your bucket list?
A:
A cummunity Centre set in a natural and urban park. A space that caters for the entire community of all ages. A multi-purpose space that could host both indoor and outdoor events and exhibitions set in a park that has both urban and natural features to be enjoyed through all the seasons.
