🎃🕯️ Halloween and All Saints’ Day: Two Ways of Looking at the Same Date 🌼

Some traditions are passed down to us, others come from elsewhere, and some gradually become part of our lives almost without us realising it. 🍂 October and November are a good example of this. For a few days, pumpkins, costumes, sweets and parties coexist with flowers, cemeteries and memories of those who are no longer with us. And although it may sometimes seem as though we have to choose between one and the other, perhaps we don’t. 💛

🌹 Remembering All Saints’ Day: Solemnity and How Traditions Change Over Time

Those of us who grew up in Spain a few decades ago remember All Saints’ Day very differently from the way many children experience it today. The night of the dead had something sombre, even unsettling, about it. 🕯️ November 1st was a day marked by visits to the cemetery, flowers and memories of deceased family members and friends. Death was present in a solemn way, associated with silence, respect and a certain sadness that seemed inevitable.

I don’t reject that tradition. It is part of our history and the way we understand remembrance. 🌼 But I also recognise that, over the years, the way I experience it has changed. I don’t need to wait until November 1st to visit my loved ones, bring them flowers or take a moment to think about them. Nor do I believe that affection depends on a particular date. Some absences stay with us throughout the year, in a gesture, a conversation, a photograph or a memory that comes to mind when we least expect it. 📸

👻 Halloween Without Prejudice: Turning Fear into Fun

And perhaps that’s why I view Halloween quite naturally. 🎃

I don’t see it as a threat to our customs, but as another way of approaching a date that has traditionally been associated with death. For children, Halloween brings a sense of play, mystery and adventure. 🦇 Costumes, pumpkins, sweets and the famous “trick or treat” turn fear into fun. And I think that has its own value too: learning that death exists without necessarily having to experience everything surrounding it through sadness. 🍬

✨ Two Traditions, One Shared Affection

Ultimately, remembering and celebrating don’t have to be at odds. 💛 In Sotogrande, these days can be perfect for both: enjoying walks among the colours of autumn 🍁, making the most of family activities with the little ones 👧👦 and taking a quiet moment for those we carry in our hearts. 💐

If you’d like to make the most of this time of year in the area, whether you’re looking for activities for little ones, outdoor walks or peaceful getaways, Sotogrande Guide has ideas for every taste. 🎃🍂
